چکیده

A study is made of the propagation of Rossby waves in a stably stratified shear flows. The wave equation for the Rossby waves is derived in an isothermal atmosphere on a beta plane in the presence of a latitudinally sheared zonal flow. It is shown that the wave equation is singular at five critical levels, but the wave absorption takes place only at the two levels where the local relative frequency equals in magnitude to the Brunt Vaisala frequency. This analysis also reveals that these two levels exhibit valve effect by allowing the waves to penetrate them from one side only. The absorption coefficient exp(2) is determined at these levels. Both the group velocity approach and single wave treatment are employed for the investigation of the problem. 1980 AMS Subject Classification Codes: 76C20, 76V05

A Buoyancy–Vorticity Wave Interaction Approach to Stratified Shear Flow

Motivated by the success of potential vorticity (PV) thinking for Rossby waves and related shear flow phenomena, this work develops a buoyancy–vorticity formulation of gravity waves in stratified shear flow, for which the nonlocality enters in the same way as it does for barotropic/baroclinic shear flows. This formulation provides a time integration scheme that is analogous to the time integrat...

Generation of zonal flows by Rossby waves in the atmosphere

A novel mechanism for the short-scale Rossby waves interacting with long-scale zonal flows in the Earth’s atmosphere is studied. The model is based on the parametric excitation of convective cells by finite amplitude Rossby waves. We use a set of coupled equations describing the nonlinear interaction of Rossby waves and zonal flows which admits the excitation of zonal flows. The generation of s...

A Theoretical Model of Long Rossby Waves in the Southern Ocean and Their Interaction with Bottom Topography

An analytical model of long Rossby waves is developed for a continuously-stratified, planetary geostrophic ocean in the presence of arbitrary bottom topography under the assumption that the potential vorticity is a linear function of buoyancy. The remaining dynamics are controlled by equations for material conservation of buoyancy along the sea surface and the sea floor. The mean, steady-state ...

Influence of Rigidity, Irregularity and Initial Stress on Shear Waves Propagation in Multilayered Media

The propagation of shear waves in an anisotropic fluid saturated porous layer over a prestressed semi-infinite homogeneous elastic half-space lying under an elastic homogeneous layer with irregularity present at the interface with rigid boundary has been studied. The rectangular irregularity has been taken in the half-space. The dispersion equation for shear waves is derived by using the pertur...

Chaotic transport by Rossby waves in shear flow

Transport and mixing properties of Rossby waves in shear flow are studied using tools from Hamiltonian chaos theory. The destruction of barriers to transport is studied analytically, by using the resonance overlap criterion and the concept of separatrix reconnection, and numerically by using PoincarC sections. Attention is restricted to the case of symmetric velocity profiles with a single maxi...
